I haven't stayed there Rabs but having just looked at the website I know where it is...it's virtually opposite 'drinking street'. It's not a bad location actually...within an easy walk of the soi 2 bars plus there are lots of bars such as Atlantic etc further up. The drinking street bars are also worth a look as well...when I was there earlier last year they had got their act together and the little complex was buzzing.
Rooms look pretty nice as well at the Empress and for 1200 seem like reasonably good value.

I stayed there early January 2010 when it was 1350 baht a night. I enjoyed my stay there. As you know it's relatively new, it has a small rooftop pool, a bar in the lobby and a restaurant on the ground floor. The location is great, just a half block from Big C, and Sabai Dee massage. The drawbacks are, the walls are pretty thin and I can hear my neighboors, I was able to smell cigarette smoke thru the adjoining door to the room. There is no joiner fee except that if you decide to take two girls, there'll be a joiner fee for the second girl. There is an in-room safe as well as a refrigerator. The rooms are spacious and well lit, although it doesn't have a balcony. The air conditioner actually worked and was so efficient that I switched it off, before going to sleep. The front desk was very professional inspite of a few demanding assholes giving them a bad time. Hey, this ain't the Dusit!
Rabbitoh, if you're a cheap charlie, just stay at the Sabai Lodge, you'll sleep a whole lot better knowing that you're saving 500 baht. Most of my friends prefer to spend less than 1,000 baht a night and refuses to spend one baht more. We're all different and have certain budgets we must adhere to, and I don't mind spending a little extra for comfort, location, and sleeping in a newer hotel. Five hundred baht for me is only about a half hour of work.
I hope this helps....
(BTW, the newly built Ibis Hotel is only two hundred meters away and around 150-200 bahts cheaper.)
